We recently got word that the Venom sequel has its director in Andy Serkis, and I have just the five comics to commemorate the occasion. If you'd like to read my thoughts on the aforementioned movie, here was the post I wrote when it first came out. THE THEME: As you may have guessed, I have five comics featuring the Venom symbiote for you today. Many characters have become hosts to the symbiote over the decades, but I did my best to stick with stories featuring its most well-known host: Eddie Brock. THE COMICS: ![]() VENOM (2018– ) #1 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Donny Cates Artist: Ryan Stegman - This is perhaps one of Marvel's biggest and most exciting ongoing series at the moment, featuring an A-list creative duo, and storylines that have forever changed the mythos and lore behind the symbiote. This first issue starts off Eddie Brock's long journey into discovering the true history of his symbiote, featuring big reveals such as its use in the Weapon Plus program, and a powerful threat that plagues its entire species. - Comixology link ![]() VENOM (2018– ) #7 Publisher: Marvel Writer: Donny Cates Artist: Iban Coello - In this seventh installment in the aforementioned series, the story slows down a bit as we see Eddie Brock captured by the Maker. As he is interrogated by his captor, Eddie discovers that his symbiote is uncharacteristically silent, and that it may be hiding things from him. - Comixology link ![]() VENOM: FIRST HOST #3 Publsiher: Marvel Writer: Mike Costa Artists, Mark Bagley, Ron Lim - First Host is a limited series where Eddie and the symbiote are separated, and a Kree warrior who claims to be its original host has taken it. Eddie has joined forces with a Skrull general in order to rescue his symbiote and stop the Kree's genocide plot against the Skrulls. It's an interesting story that further fleshes out the symbiote's already expansive lore. - Comixology link ![]() VENOM: NIGHTS OF VENGEANCE #1 Publisher: Marvel Writer:Howard Mackie Artist: Ron Lim - Venom teams up with occasional Ghost Rider villain Vengeance in order to take down a superpowered team of mercenaries called the Stalkers. It's a cool team-up complemented by some awesome art. - Comixology link ![]() EDGE OF VENOMVERSE #1 Publihser: Marvel Writer: Matthew Rosenberg Artist: Roland Boschi - Somewhat inspired by the popular Spider-Verse, Edge of Venomverse is a prelude to the massive Venomverse crossover, featuring versions of established Marvel characters as hosts to the symbiote. In this one, we see an alternate version of X-23 become host to the symbiote, which is as cool as it sounds. - Comixology link From its humble beginnings as an explanation for Spidey's black-and-white costume, the Venom symbiote has become one of the most interesting pieces of lore in the entire Marvel Universe. With various series over the decades (including many that were published just recently), it's been established that the symbiote has ties to SHIELD and the Weapon Plus program, has connections to the Kree-Skrull War, and even to the Thor mythos with Gorr the God Butcher's use of the Necrosword. The black alien goop has certainly come a long way. Not only that, but the Eddie/Venom dynamic has become more and more interesting over the years as well. Though the novelty of seeing the symbiote take on different hosts is still appealing to me, there's a reason the Eddie/Venom duo is iconic. Hell, that dynamic is one of the saving graces of the admittedly average Venom movie from last year, and if there's one thing I'm looking forward to in the sequel (other than Carnage), it's seeing Eddie and the symbiote's captivating banter again.
