I didn't plan ahead on what to read this week, so I picked out a Five Comics theme from my handy-dandy list of themes I prepared when I first started this blog series. THE THEME: It's yet another Leading Ladies theme, and by now, you should know what that entails. The twist this week is that instead of the selection of comics being tied to a more specific theme or publisher like the previous ones, I decided to let loose and pick out female-led comic series from a wider pool of publishers. I went the extra mile to make sure every title is from a different publisher. Best of all, every comic I feature here is free to download, so if you have a Comixology account, you can get right to reading. THE COMICS: ![]() FAITH #1 Publisher: Valiant Writer: Jody Houser Artists: Francis Portela, Marguerite Sauvage - Faith Herbert, AKA Zephyr has started a new life in Los Angeles after her stint with the superhero team Renegades took a turn for the tragic. She's gotten a new job as a writer for a website and is easing back into superheroics, but one of her "missions" ends up being a deeper mystery than she anticipated. I'm a big fan of the Valiant universe, and this comic does not shy away from its connections to titles such as Harbinger and Archer & Armstrong. - FREE on Comixology ![]() FATHOM VOL. 1 #0 Publisher: Aspen Comics Writer: Michael Turner Artists: Michael Turner, Joe Weems - A prelude comic to the long-running Fathom series, which stars Aspen Matthews, a woman with a deep affinity for the water. In this issue, you get a sense of her character as she narrates her backstory to some seemingly unrelated panels that tease a deeper mystery in the oceanic depths she holds so dear. - FREE on Comixology ![]() GEEK-GIRL VOL. 1: WHATEVER HAPPENED TO RUBY KAYE? Publisher: AAM/Markosia Writer: Sam Johnson Artist: Carlos Granda - Ruby Kaye was given superpowers by a pair of glasses, but a side effect was that she became incredibly clumsy, leading her best friend to dub her "Geek-Girl." This issue seems to be a setup to the second volume, as it's mostly an epilogue detailing the events shortly after Ruby's encounter with the villain Lightning Storm. - FREE on Comixology - BONUS free comic: Geek-Girl Free Preview ![]() A BRIEF HISTORY OF TANK GIRL (FCBD 2018) Publisher: Titan Comics Writer: Alan C. Martin Artists: Brett Parson, Jonathan Edwards, Warwick Johnson-Cadwell - This FCBD offering is an off-kilter story that sees Tank Girl celebrating her birthday, with her friends recounting past adventures (including a strange retelling of Tank Girl's publication history). It's a fun time, and I especially enjoy the liberal changing of art styles throughout the comic. - FREE on Comixology ![]() VAMPIRELLA (2019–) #0 (FCBD 2019) Publisher: Dynamite Writers: Christopher Priest, Kurt Busiek Artists Ergün Gündüz, Arthur Adams - In this 50th anniversary celebration, the comic contains two stories featuring the titular character, each from different eras (one tying in to the modern series, and the other being an old story from what I think is the '90s). She might not be the most popular character, but Vampirella is as classic as they come, and this is a good place to start as any. - FREE on Comixology Comic book heroines exist beyond the realm of Marvel and DC, and I think I have demonstrated this fact well with today's Five Comics episode. My picks certainly lean more towards the superhero persuasion, but there are certainly more female-led comics out there that venture outside this genre. Anybody who tells you there aren't any women in comics (either in the context of full-fledged characters or real-life people within the industry) doesn't know what they're talking about, and this blog entry is one in a many series of "fuck you" rebuttals I have for that crowd. PANEL OF THE WEEK: - end -
